Was King Kendrick Crowned Too Soon?

Image
In the time Kendrick Lamar has been in the game many have already dubbed him the G.O.A.T and he has dropped amazing bodies of work that's for sure but the question is has he done enough to be called one of the greats. When people talk about his discography they often leave out his mixtapes with Overly Dedicated being an exemption, his mixtapes in my opinion weren't that good now granted when most artist first starts out they aren't that good they are still working on their craft. When Kendrick dropped his debut album "Section 80" he showed just how much potential he has its had a few good songs such as "Keisha's Song" "Rigamortus" and "HiiiPower" but it still wasn't good enough project when you compare it to something like Drake's "Thank Me Later" or even Cole's "Sideline Story" both of the projects had songs that people are still listening...

Supporting Our Own.

Image
So I recently started a spotify account and I was really heartbroken by the numbers that SA artists have compared to the other artists from countries, considering how talented the artists we have are I honestly feel as though that their numbers should be way higher. Someone like AKA only has 122 338 monthly listeners on Spotify and considering that AKA is one the best we have in the country I only feel like his numbers should be way higher, another artist A-Reece only has 43 378 monthly listeners, Reece is an insanely talented rapper his numbers also should be way higher too. We live in a country with 59 308 690 people and the youth being people of the ages of 15 to 34 make up 20.6 million last time I checked the stats concerning the population in the country and none of our South African artists have a million plus monthly listeners now I know not all of us young people have money to be on Spotify there is Spotify free were you basically...

J. Cole and Nomane.

Image
Recently J. Cole created a stir on social media with his song called "Snow On Tha Bluff". People were trying to cancel him for some of the lyrics on the song,he was accused of policing the tone of an female artist who goes by the name of Nomane and he was called  misogynistic amongst other things.  I honestly felt as though people didn't really listen to the whole song thoroughly they heard certain parts of the song and made their own assumptions about what Cole was trying to say. Now this whole started when Nomane tweeted that major artists who's discographies are about black plight weren't doing enough in the wake of George Floyd's murder at the hands of police officers (Even though Cole was out in the streets protesting with people). Many people thought she was talking about artists like Cole and Kendrick Lamar (including Cole himself). When J. Cole dropped that song in question many people tried cancelling him and really forgot about all the amazing th...

The Importance of the Popcast

Image
I started watching the Popcast hosted by Scoop, Ms Cosmo, DJ Vigilante and DJ Speedsta a couple of months ago and since I stared watching I've definitely learned a lot, not just about music but also about the culture, the business element of the entertainment industry and so much more. That show is a must watch for people who like listening to music, artists who are on the come up, and people who want to get involved in the behind scenes of the music industry. They cover a variety of topics, they speak what's on their minds, they are honest in their opinions and they don't show any favoritism towards any artist. What I like most about the Popcast is the way they discuss their topics, they have debates in a mature manner, none of the hosts try to be the center of attention, they listen to each other, none of them think they are always right and they also welcome feedback from the general public.  My favorite episode definitely has to be the time they talked...

Dee Koala The Future

Image
I first heard of Dee Koala when I heard the Utatakho Remix and at first I really didn't pay attention to her verse (most people myself included was talking about Boity's) then I started to listen to the song more throughly and I started to enjoy her verse more,it was catchy and she played with words in a great way.  So one day I was just chilling around campus and I decided to listen her music and check out her videos. I first saw a video for a song called "Ndintswempu" which featured Amilca Mezariti and SimulationRxps the video was fire but the one that really did it for me was the Friday Freestyle now that one was on another level, she really delivered, both the song and video were amazing. I recently listened to her 14 track debut album 4 the Khaltsha  and I really enjoyed that project, to say it was good is an understatement that album was flawless. The songs were catchy AF you can't help but want to dance and sin...

FLVME The Candy Man

Image
When FLVME,Ecco and Mellow all left the Wrecking Crew, many people including myself thought it was over for them and we would never hear anything about them again. Instead it has been the total opposite, they formed their own group called Lean Team and they have dropped more music and proved they can stand and shine without A-Reece. Now let's talk about the Candyman album FLVME dropped all the way in 2018, that was my favorite hip-hop album of the year. I really wasn't that much of a FLVME fan,I listened to his songs that featured Reece only. So when I listened to Candyman I was really blown away and saw a whole new side to him. He really poured his heart and soul on the album and I have a feeling we still haven't seen the truly best of him yet. I liked the creativity that went into the cover art and the way the tracks were placed was something I also liked very much. Ecco also came through with fire verses on the songs he was on and Mell...

The Tale Of A Once in a Generation Talent called Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.

Image
I'd like to believe that many people born in the late 90s and early 2000s all fell in love with hip-hop when we first heard a Lil Wayne song, album or mixtape, for me I fell in love with hip-hop and started to like Lil Wayne when I heard the song Lollipop feat Static Major in 2008 and the rest as they say is history. From that moment on all I listened to was Wayne, in my eyes he was truly the best rapper alive at the time. Nobody was working as hard as him, dropping hits like him and doing a lot of features on songs that turned into hits because he was on them and lets not even start with the legendary Mixtape Weezy how he would take other people songs, rap over them and make you forget that song belonged to someone else. Nobody in the industry can say they weren't influenced by Wayne someway or somehow, Lil Wayne was way different from all the rappers that came before him. When people started Cash Money the label he was s...

The Dreamers of Dreamville

Image
I don't think there's any artist that gets into the music business and they don't want get recognition for their work like getting nominated for awards such as the Grammys and winning them. Many artists have been in the game for a long time and not once have they won a Grammy let alone being nominated for one and then there's J.Cole and his Dreamville roster. With the Revenge of The Dreamers III album being nominated for a Grammy that makes everyone person who was involved in the album a Grammy nominated artist, producer and that makes every artist on the Dreamville roster a Grammy nominated artist, that is huge. I didn't know the artists on Dreamville until I heard the album and I must say Cole has an eye for talent, from start to finish that album has some amazing songs and all the Dreamville artists Bas, Ari Lennox, Lute,Cozz,Omen, Earthgang and Cole himself killed all the songs they appeared on and they didn't disappoint. A deluxe addition of the album was dr...

Champagnepapi The GOAT

Image
Drake deserves the title of GOAT because no rapper has ever been so constant at the top, from the moment he dropped Best I Ever Had which was in 2009 until now he has just been dropping classics and getting better with time.  A lot of rappers are usually hot for a certain time period but Drake on the other hand has been hot for a Decade. He has had the game in the palms of his hands, winning countless awards and spending so much time on Billboards it's crazy. Drake is also a very versatile rapper, in 2018 he dropped a double disc album called Scorpion a great body of work which had Side-A which contained strictly rap songs and side-B which contained songs that he was singing on. He also has songs like One Dance and Get It Together which are Afrobeats and also he uses different types of flows in certain songs like War which he recently dropped, Behind Barz freestyle and he has also rapped in a different language on a song called MIA by Bad Bunny. He has had his fair shar...
