Supporting Our Own.

So I recently started a spotify account and I was really heartbroken by the numbers that SA artists have compared to the other artists from countries, considering how talented the artists we have are I honestly feel as though that their numbers should be way higher. Someone like AKA only has 122 338 monthly listeners on Spotify and considering that AKA is one the best we have in the country I only feel like his numbers should be way higher, another artist A-Reece only has 43 378 monthly listeners, Reece is an insanely talented rapper his numbers also should be way higher too.


We live in a country with 59 308 690 people and the youth being people of the ages of 15 to 34 make up 20.6 million last time I checked the stats concerning the population in the country and none of our South African artists have a million plus monthly listeners now I know not all of us young people have money to be on Spotify there is Spotify free were you basically use spotify for free even though it uses data and we all know in South data is expensive AF but I still feel that we must try our best to support our own artists because they really give the best music, the most streamed artist in South Africa is Kabza Da Small and he only has 365 098 monthly listeners and considering how many anthems he and Maphorisa gave us that number should be way up there. Only Black Coffee has a 1 million plus monthly listeners on Spotify and in a country filled with so many talented artists to have only one artist who has those high numbers its not on. I know that our artists are responsible for making sure that they put themselves on to a more global stage so that they can more recognition to be able to increase their numbers so that they can also be on the same level as artists from US but as the saying goes "charity begins at home" and we as the fans from South Africa we should be supporting them fully.


I'm not saying we shouldn't support other artists from other countries (I'm a big Drake fan) but we have to do better by our artists as fans, the same energy we put into support the likes of Drake, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj we should also put into supporting guys like Cassper Nyovest, Busiswa and Sho Madjozi just to name a few. We have a great deal of talent in South Africa that just as good as other artists from countries such America, England etc.

Emtee's second studio album Manado was really a great project,filled with smash hits. Had that album been marketed right it could have done amazing numbers just like his debut album Avery. He is one of the most gifted we have in South Africa, and his music speaks for itself. Usually when artists have a great debut album their second album isn't as good as their first but in my personal opinion I feel like Manado was a great second album because it showed growth in Emtee's music,it didn't sound the same as his debut album. Rouge- Queen of the New Era

I started listening to Rouge after I heard her verse on the Baddest Remix by AKA, she had one if not the best verse on the song. Everything about her verse was exceptional,the way she switched flows,languages and what she said in that verse was something special. I didn't listen to her for a while after that but when she dropped her debut album "New Era Sessions" in 2017 I was hooked again. She really showed her versatility on that album,her bars were totally amazing,every song captures your attention and makes you take note of her lyrical content. The storytelling on songs like "Celebrity" and "Sheba Ngwan'o" just to name a few are great and she paints a very vivid and great picture with her words. The Weeknd The Greatest Artist Of Our Time.

After Hours was where my journey began with the artist know as The Weeknd, from the very first moment I heard that album I instantly became a big fan, I mean sure I had heard of him before but there was something about the After Hours album that made me see him in a different light.
